After 26 in the Royal Navy, I find it hard to believe that people can be so selfish. Yet again, we are experiencing a classic case of NIMBY mentality. Who on earth do these people think they are. They sit under the umbrella of democracy that servicemen have given their whole lives to protect. I feel ashamed to be British when their are people in this country that are so narrow minded. Lets get this through the planning application and poke the eye of ignorance and class.

Unfortunately, this case serves as yet another example of the fact that the general population no longer identifies with the Armed Forces or appreciates the service that they provide to this country. That said, the behaviour of the residents in and around Grays Lane is appalling and their objections should be quashed by the Planning committee.

Of equal concern is how our political masters view this matter - an extract from Hansard dated 26 July: Nick Harvey: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will support the Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen and Families Association in its application to the local council to make alterations to its property in Ashtead, Surrey, for armed forces' families visiting Headley Court. [152357] Derek Twigg: As I made clear on a recent visit to Headley Court, when I opened a new ward, I am most grateful for the Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA)—Forces Help’s offer to provide a property for the short-term accommodation of families visiting relatives being treated there. So where is your answer to a very simple question Mr Twigg? Oh! of course this was all part of the rushed business of the House before their 11 week summer recess. By which time local authority decisions will have been made without Mr Twigg having to declare his hand. I leave you to draw your own conclusions about this and other Armed Services issues at Ministers doors.

I have always believed that Great Britain was the best place to live on this Earth. Mainly due to the generousity of its population. We always seemed to rise to the occasion whether it be by raising money for good causes or by simply helping each other. Unfortunately, my faith has been dented by a few undeserving people who are only thinking of themselves. They should be ashamed for putting ojections in the way of this noble cause.

The attitude of these residents is appalling and the worst example of selfish NIMBYism I can think of. What is our country coming to? These people don't deserve an Army to protect them.

As a daughter of an ex-seviceman I am appalled at the attitude of these residents. An establishment for these purposes is an absolute necessity. These service men and women should have a place close by for their family to stay. They have risked their lives providing a service for our country. Providing a place for their families to stay is surely a small repayment.

Karen of Ashtead - Thank you for your kind words of support.
We know that the vast majority in Ashtead are decent people and that most of the objectors have been misled by alarmist propaganda. I am sure they would be hard-pressed to detect any difference if 36 Grays Lane were used for SSAFA's laudable purposes.
I hope you and all your like-minded friends put your balancing views in writing to the Council and provide your presence at the meeting on the 1st.

Well done & thank you for all your efforts to muster support for this appeal. It is a sad reflection on our society that these local residents can be so lacking in understanding and so self centered as to have created the need for this campaign. What those residents need are some of our local floods to demonstrate just how equal we all are!

Being an Ashtead resident, I am ashamed of the handful of people behaving in such a detestable manner. There is No contest, the majority of Ashtead is behind. God Bless.
