I wholeheartedly support the SSAFA project and think the local residents should be ashamed of themselves!

Both Geoff, my husand, and I have signed the petition and put up notices rleating to the petition. Geoff actually designed the house for the present owners - and, by the way, it included two wheelchair ramps - and he'd be delighted to see it used for such a worthwhile cause. We are both utterly ashamed of those residents who have raised such puerile objections. Their minds are narrower than Grays Lane itself and if the comment about terrorism is anything to go by just as twisted (and that's being polite!).As my stepson who has lived in Australia for a number of years says - 'Christmas comes earlier every year! They're already 'closing the stable door' in Ashtead...

Penny of Ashtead - I have only just picked up on your opinion that "the accommodation would be far better on site [Headley Court] to allow flexible visiting". You raise a good point and it deserves answering, not just for your benefit but for others, too.
In the first place, SSAFA is a charity and holds no sway over Headley Court which is on MoD poperty, Sad to say, the MoD has no funding for such a facility. That's another story.
Secondly, the need to get the right approval and clearances, and planning and building such a facility, would no doubt take several years. However, the need is IMMEDIATE owing to the increased numbers of wounded souls returning from ever more hostile environments.
Last but not least, have you read this extract from a service wife elsewhere on this website?
"I had to take my girls to visit Headley Court one day to pick their dad up. Upon getting there we sat in the living room area waiting for him. When the lads came back from physio in the pool. The sight that we were greeted with was one that saddened me and upset my daughter. Men with arms, legs, eyes, parts of their heads missing and in wheelchairs are not sights a 6 year-old and a 3 year-old should ever have to see. But when you don’t have a place to go as a family, what else can you do?"
What a pity there was nowhere for this lady's children to be looked after while she picked up her husband.
As an ex-nurse, you will doubtless have more experience of such distressing scenes than I have but I'm sure you would not wish to expose small children to them. I am also sure you will appreciate that traumatised parents, spouses and children will require occasional respite; somewhere quiet and remote to which they can retire, download their feelings and exchange troubled thoughts in an uninhibited fashion with others who are able to empathise because they share the same torment. That is why 36 Grays Lane is ideal.
I hope I have answered your point adequately without resorting to the abuse you seem to expect.

I am a serving member of the military and am utterly appalled by the views expressed by the people of Ashtead. There are young men and women making the ultimate sacrifice for their country and those who have the most horrendous injuries. We should all (civilian and military) be doing our utmost to support them and their families at what must be the most difficult of times as active young people come to terms with their disability. Even if it were true, a little more noise, a little more traffic and a little rubbish to be collected would, I should have thought, be no price to pay.

Ex ABF and ARRSE keep up the good work and tightening that tourniquet on the objectors objections. I did 23 years and came out in one peice, I know many that didn't. Also did 5 weeks full time physio at Headley Court following a para acc, the patients and staff deserve all the help they can get and this accommodation will be a major step forward. Objectors, you're objections are noted and in my opinion mostly unreasonable.

I think the onjections of this village are completely unacceptable and demaeaning to those of us who have served and still serve in HM Forces. I think perhaps the villages worry more about the house prices than they do about terrorism, or am i just becoming cynical.

I believe every servicemember should have the knowledge that his community will support him if he is injured. He should know that his family will have somewhere to go to start the recover process. I think you folks are on to something good here, and wish you all the best. You have a long and difficult road ahead.
As for the residents of Grays lane- shame on you all. Your objections are weak, your interest are purely self serving, and you should all examine just who you are, and what you stand for.

These people should feel honoured and proud to be part of a community that could offer some support to the families of injured serviceman. Alas this is evidently not the case and SSAFA should quickly seek an alternative residence within a community who would be proud of the honour.
As for Grays Road – the government should place a compulsory purchase order (as they did during other wars) on every other house, and use them as secure housing for asylum seekers or better still the families of suspected terrorists.
