Welcome to the 36 Grays Lane guestbook.

Please feel free to express your feelings below, but try to keep it polite!

It seems that the guestbook software is throwing a few glitches. We've had a few reports of random "permanent bannings" and posts disappearing. Please accept our apologies if either of these happen to you and, if you want to enter a message but it won't allow you, feel free to email your message and the name / location you'd like put to the email on the home-page

We've found that the vast majority of Ashtead residents are overwhelmingly supportive of SSAFA, Headley Court, the Armed Forces and our campaign. The 90 or so objectors, and their attitudes, do not represent most Ashtead residents from everything we've seen. Please, in thanks to all those people, bear that in mind when posting!

Thank you to everyone who's helped achieve this wonderful result. We've known from the outset that the concerns raised were misplaced. SSAFA and the families concerned will now have the chance to prove that. We know they'll be more than equal to the task.

Oh, and thanks for all the fish

Totally shocked that anyone could object to this proposal. Signed the petition.

Fingers crossed that it will go ahead!

I truly hope that the relevant council officials will see past the total selfishness of the apparently small number of residents, who probably wouldn't stop to help a dying person in the street for fear of getting their clothes dirty, and allow this residential facility to go through. Although I do not have service personnel in the family now, my 1 1/2 year old niece was in Kings College Hospital in January of this year with a brain tumour, and it made the world of difference to her parents and herself that there was a family residential facility nearby, provided by MacDonalds. Without this, the trauma of the experience would have been hugely greater. These servicemen and women have given so much of themselves to help protect our country - the ingrates of Ashtead should try to remember that when they consider denying them the comfort of having their families near them.

I am not sure what is more contemptible, the lack of support for service men from our Government, or the NIMBYism on show from the 83 local residents?

These families need our support how dare these people in Surry behave in this way,I bet if their loved ones were in Germany the boot would be on the other foot.they would be screaming for someone to help.
I have been a planning chair this is the worst sort of NIMBY! That I have heard to date.
All these people should move if they don't like it.
Wake up to the real world building and change of use is going on in our back garden why should you be exempt.I am surrounded by Flats and it hasn't effected the price of my property.

I came across your website by accident and I am absolutely astounded by the local residents attitude to this!!
How is it they are able to sit on their backsides in the luxury of their homes with the freedom of speech to voice these selfish opinions? It's due to our servicemen putting their lives on the line every single day. I really am speechless and quite frankly utterly ashamed. Not only are our forces being let down by the government and the system, they are now being let down by the people they defend. Hang your heads in shame.

Is it not enough that we ask our service men and women to put their lives on the line only then seek to deny them some comfort whilst being rehabilitated? If Her Majesty’s Government refuses to understand this, then it surely must fall to our communities to provide these facilities?
There is well documented evidence that a patient will respond better to treatment if they are allowed a modicum of normality, i.e. a visit from their loved ones.
I am, however, am at a loss to understand quite how anyone would object to such a Centre being built, but then I have never understood the NIMBY mentality that seems to go hand in hand with property prices. SSAFA are not asking to build another Sizewell B, just a place where a wife can visit her husband and offer her support in the most tragic of circumstances. Or a family can visit their daughter to help her get back on her feet, both mentally and physically.
We live in a democracy where people are entitled to demonstrate peacefully and disagree with planning applications. However, I am unsure quite what there is to object to in this case.

But to those residents who have objected to this application, I say this - "It is not beyond the realms of possibility that one day someone you care for could end up in a place like Headley Court and I hope to God that the community they find themselves in take them to their hearts, because you have seen fit to close yours to the young men and women of the UK who are fighting for a more peaceful world".
Yes, the language is emotive, but then so is the subject. I feel passionately that the application should be granted and the letters of support made available to the objectors in a hope that something will stir them into being better people.

The 'celeb' culture again? Can we remind such selfish people of those words:

"Remind them of us, and say for your tomorrows we gave our today"

God forbid these people, If anything happens in this country, who do they call on!! The firemans strike, the rubbishmen strike, the floods that are now devastating the country, to name a few. What if these personnel are injured saving their houses or buisness during a fire, would they back them up!!!!?? these Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen are just back from doing active service for their country and they are then asked to go out and help others instead of spending a well erned rest with their loved ones, all this without any complaint! as an ex serviceman of 30 years I and others have had a moan about going out to do jobs after coming home but you just get on with it!
