Welcome to the 36 Grays Lane guestbook.

Please feel free to express your feelings below, but try to keep it polite!

It seems that the guestbook software is throwing a few glitches. We've had a few reports of random "permanent bannings" and posts disappearing. Please accept our apologies if either of these happen to you and, if you want to enter a message but it won't allow you, feel free to email your message and the name / location you'd like put to the email on the home-page

We've found that the vast majority of Ashtead residents are overwhelmingly supportive of SSAFA, Headley Court, the Armed Forces and our campaign. The 90 or so objectors, and their attitudes, do not represent most Ashtead residents from everything we've seen. Please, in thanks to all those people, bear that in mind when posting!

Thank you to everyone who's helped achieve this wonderful result. We've known from the outset that the concerns raised were misplaced. SSAFA and the families concerned will now have the chance to prove that. We know they'll be more than equal to the task.

Oh, and thanks for all the fish

The attitude of local residents brings to mind Kipling " But it's good old Tommy Atkins when the guns begin to roar".
Presumably these objectors would have been highly delighted if the Services were turned out to deliver bottled water to them as in Glos last week, or put out fires when the fire services are on strike.

I would like to suggest that maybe those individuals that have seen fit to oppose this wonderful idea, should be sent to Iraq or Afghanistan for a tour of duty!! They might just change their mind. Good luck with your continued fight.

Wishing the very best of everything today for SSAFA and the team!

At this point I would like to ask the opposers to dig deeper into their reasoning. I read all the letters and veiled excuses (even the child's crayoned 'NO' ?!) and 'if you can't be honest with yourself, then you live a lie'.

The slim possibility of opening the floodgates to similar?? houses can easily be covered by adding a clause when granting the proposal. If this clause was the magic ingredient, the viels would have to drop.

I'm a caring mother, wife and neighbour. I have the same concerns for my family, my children, my neighbours, my country, my locality, my community etc as any considerate person does. I belong to the Forces Community and as a family; we are all very similar decent, law abiding, hard working, supportive and caring, proud, quiet and considerate individuals. As a result I am sure we are no different from current residents in Grays Lane. I have always been welcome at the numerous locations we have resided.

So, why do some not desire to have a tiny proportion of us as neighbours, let's be honest here? I'm sure I'd be welcomed as a neighbour had I purchased the property, regardless of how many young children/teenagers/older children/visitors/cars I may have. An asbo lottery winner could have purchased the property.

36 Grays Lane will not always be used at full capacity. Even if it were, PLEASE remember that we also like to educate our children and maintain their stability. As Forces Families we HAVE to rely on the help of family/friends/neighbours/each other, therefore, my child would still be attending their school/boarding school or nursery even if I/we used the home at 36 Grays Lane. As for describing this house as a Hostel, No, we would have to ensure it resembled as close to a ‘home from home’ as possible. Wouldn't you?

The opposers make their own minimal noise. In fact, there seems to have been an abundance of house extensions in the area over the past few years which I am sure increased noise and traffic? The house in question was once a bungalow. A few quiet, considerate and decent neighbours pre-occupied with their partners recovery could surely not impact so dreadfully on anyones quality of life?

I's unbelievably low to imagine any person may use the price of their house or the lowering of their neighbourhood as a reason not to welcome, temporarily, other decent people to their midst. The Headley Court residents and their families have already paid a far higher premium than the cost of a house. Furthermore, with their experiences they will also value the very breath of life more highly than most.

Would we have got through WW2 with this attitude? What does the future entail, is this really it?

You are doing a great job and I back you 100% and wish you the best of luck against the Nimbys.
I can't believe how selfish these people are.
I've signed the Downing Street petition and have remembered SSAFA in my will. Our forces are doing such a magnificent job in frightful circumstances and I and all my friends are tremendously proud of your courage and tenacity.
Three cheers and congratulations on the way you are fighting for the hostel.

Goodluck for today to all organisations and friends of SSAFA, in their fight against the people who prefer to be safe in their armchair's, rather than be able to look someone in the eye & give a small jesture of thanks by helping those families, feel welcome in their neighbourhood.

I am appalled at the excuses being made by the local residents. Have these indivduals been invited to Headley Court to look around and meet some the people affected by this issue? Maybe they would change their opinions, stop being so selfish and support this very worthy use of property.

I can't believe this appalling attitude exists in this day and age. It's simply sheer arrogance on the part of the residents, who look down on service personnel and their families as working class and "below" them. I, and probably 100% of the serving and former serving community are behind you.

I would consider myself incredibly privileged to have a facility next door to me. I cannot believe that the NIMBY attitude extends this far. I am willing to bet that these residents park in disabled bays at their local supermarket.
