Having the opportunity to serve in the USA makes this saga even more unbelievable. Over here their servicemen & women are treated with respect and honour and the poulation at large would not dream of saying or doing anything against the unfortunate individuals who have paid the price of freedom. Perhaps those in Grays Lane would care to put a monetary value on the freedom others have bought for them, and then consider moving somewhere else if the neighbourhood is going down hill!

What a shame it is that a service charity has to use its money to purchase a house near to Headley Court in able for relatives to visit their kin. I note in all the reports that I have read the absence of members of our government giving alternative options or perhaps putting their hands in our money (ie. taxes) and purchasing a suitable premises.
I don't support the position of the current residents of Grays Lane, but perhaps I could be so bold as to to suggest and alternative solution. If 36 Grays Lane is going to reduce the value of the current residents house values which appears to be the most important reason for their nimbyism and if as Richard Elphick, the local estate agent SSAFA should 'spend their money a few roads along on something twice the size, or get the same sized house for half the money'. Why don't the eighty objectors get together and purchase the house down the road for SSAFA. This would get, us the apparent hoi-polloi out of their hair and leave SSAFA with money to use for their other charitable efforts. After all, the suggestion has been made that the Nimbys could lose up to 20% of the value of their houses which could be £340,000 each, showing a saving the money they would spend. Furthermore if they then leased the property to SSAFA on a peppercorn rent, they could get their money back when this ghastly war in Iraq and Afghanistan is over and show a profit no doubt.

I fail to see how any of the protesters arguments stand up to any scrutiny as they are all so shallow and based on unproven, misguided and deliberately false suppositions.
This place is intended as a restful and relaxing home from home for a few people who need to be near to their relatives during a period of great trauma. Its not as if there were plans for a major change of use. This is simply a case of a few people who believe themselves to be better than others deluding themselves that their blinkered way of life will be altered. It won't be. the only suffering will be their own doing.
I bet that none of the homes run by RAFA or the other military charities have encountered any problems with complaining neighbours. I bet those neighbours have not been inconvenienced or affected in any way or seen the prices of their properties de-valued by having such good neighbours.

Opponents to SSAFA's plans in Ashtead should be ashamed of themselves. Were their neighbourhood flooded due to storms or their houses on fire during a firefighters' strike, they would doubtless expect members of the Armed Forces to risk their lives for them.
This kind of self-centred NIMBYism is very un-British. Opponents to this scheme who buy poppies this autumn or who experience a "lump in their throats" when they see the Chelsea Pensioners marching and being wheeled past the Cenotaph, are merely paying lip service to the respect which our servicemen and their families deserve.

Wishing every success for the vote this evening. Thank you Headley Court, Thank you SSAFA. And to all our armed servicemen and women - there is no way we can ever thank you properly. You are simply the best, millions of us know that and millions support and appreciate you. Just a pity that there are some misguided bods who don't recognise a real class act. We should all be petitioning our MPs for a Headley in each county with a family respite home alongside.

I just want to take the opportunity to wish all on the Blue Team, and everyone else out there supporting this cause actively or in spirit, the very best of luck at the meeting tonight. You have done an outstanding job in circulating the news and amassing such widespread support from across the country.
When I first saw the reports I was dumbfounded by the negative and, in my opinion, insulting attitude of some of the residents. I will say no more here than to hope that they can live with their consciences (if they have any).
Fortunately, during my 38 years with the RAF, I never had need of facilities like Headley Court. Now retired, but still with MOD, I signed the petition and circulated the web links as widely as possible. I'll be thinking of you tonight when the Bandits are sighted - Tally Ho!

I am a member of a website for the loved ones of men and women proudly serving in our wonderful armed forces - supportoursoldiers.co.uk. All of us on the website have signed and had all of our friends sign the petition for Grays Lane. The apathy of the opponents to the plans is almost as bizarre as their reasons for opposing it. My beautiful 20 year old son is serving in Afghanistan as I write. He very bravely saved his best mate from a burning vehicle back in May, for which he has been told he deserves to receive the VC. His friend went to Headley Court for rehabilitation and I am very sure he will recover quicker with his wonderful family nearby for support. I hope the snobs in Grays Lane that have opposed the plans never have to go to bed at night wondering if tomorrow will be the day they get the knock at the door about their sons or daughters being dead or injured.

Good effort. Let's hope the council see sense, disregard the Bogus objections of these Nimbys who obviously care more about there own wealth than the sacrifices made by our brave servicemen and women. Get this facility running - it's long overdue.

I, along with so many, many others find the objections voiced by locals beyond belief. The residents in the care of Headly Court have given their utmost in defence of the freedoms that we all so richly cherish and we should all be doing our level best to help and assist them in their recovery. Not trying to belittle their efforts by refusing them the comfort of family and friends.
