Well done everyone! What an amazing show of team work, conduct and people power.
I wish I could be a neighbour of the house, it would be a privilege. I am sure, given time, the 36 Grays Lane opposition will come to appreciate their new neighbours and their concerns will be diminished by time and reality. The Headley Court families truely deserve this home from home.

It appears that we have the desired result - well done to all concerned! I was attempting to follow progress on ARRSE, but it seems it is in meltdown at the moment! As stated by Airborne Aircrew, the next challenge should be to welcome the objectors into the fold so that they can feel the buzz!

I made an entry in your guest book a few days ago, in that entry I said, that I hoped that the community I remembered in Ashtead is still alive and well ( I cant remember my exact words and cannot find the entry now, please excuse me).
It is many years since I wept ( I am a fair few years over the age of 50 now!) but I watched the podcast of the meeting, and wept with uncontained joy at the decisive unanimous vote, not just for the families who will have the benfit of this centre but also with joy for the people and representatives of my old home village. I hope and pray now that the residents of Grays Road will open thier hearts and minds to the families who use the centre- and show once and for all that Ashtead, its council and its community are the proud and honourable people that in my heart I always knew they were

Thank you to absolutely everyone who's made this happen!
Mrs SM has asked if I can get some sleep now please? So we'll get the site updated properly asap, but probably not tonight

Good result. I had my doubts when some councillors were starting by saying, 'We all support the wonderfull work done at Headly Court...BUT...etc etc. But the tide turned and Sue was wonderful, you could hear a pin drop in the council chamber when she spoke with such dignity and feeling. My one regret, I could stay for the meeting at the forward beer post, early start tomorrow. Again, good result, blasted council chamber needs a god clean though, got a bit of dust in my eye when the result was read out. By the way, 36 Grays Lane is now a firm fixture on my Christmas Card list.

Congratulations to each and everyone of you who took the time and effort to make this work for the families. From being in that depth of despair myself, knowing that the suuport from the people is there means so much.
you should be VERY proud of yourselves

Ladies and Gentlemen:
Congratulations and thanks to everyone who played any part in this victory. Special thanks to Sue Norton who's speech demonstrated perfectly who the people are and why this house is needed. Thanks also to the councilors who voted today. You have proved that while there may be some who's interests are not in lockstep with the rest but that there is a system of recourse that works.
However, while we rejoice we must also remember the "losers", who should they choose to be, can actually be the winners too. While the urge to gloat is strong please remember that the message is carried much more strongly by showing class and leaving them in peace then in being an obnoxious winner.
It's also time we begin to try to find a way to integrate the residents into the SSAFA house. The ultimate way to demonstrate our victory to them is to have them help and support the house. That's the new discussion.
