The importance of post traumatic stress and recovery cannot be measured in terms of bricks and mortar and house prices! The residents of Gray's Lane could learn much from my fellow residents in Gloucestershire following the recent deluge of rain.
I am appalled! I have read the letters; by the total lack of compassion shown by those whose comfortable life style is protected by the very people whose welfare is obviously of no import to their own cosy and comfortable existence.
I wonder if one of their own sons or daughters were in Headley Court they would espouse the same sentiments.

Doug, I have that situation here. My home happens, for convenience, to be the Registered Office of my Company. No employees on site, no disturbance, and I don't even pay Business Rates, just Domestic. A totally specious argument from NIMBYs who are possibly doing the same themselves, as you suggest.

Anan said: "...A couple of things struck me reading the comments: Re the 'it's already an area used for business purposes' comments that seem to appear frequently - businesses need an official registered address for company law purposes to which official post (tax letters, etc) is delivered. In the case of small businesses this is usually the business owner's home address, rather than the address of the physical business site. It just means a bit of extra post is delivered to that address occasionally. If this is the case in Grays Lane(which I suspect it is) I'm afraid there won't be much mileage to be had from this argument when it comes to the planning hearing."
Actually the registered office of a limited company is not only for the receipt of mail. The company statutory books and documents must be available for inspection during working hours. The company name must be clearly displayed in front of the premises. Not just a letterbox, then. Of course I have no doubt that the relevant residents in Grays Lane are complying fully with all statutory requirements.

An Open Letter to The Residents of Gray’s Lane
Ladies and gentlemen,
I write on the assumption that members of the Residents’ Association are reading this thread. I shall not attempt to address the specious issues you have raised in your objections to the Planning Proposal. You know them for what they are, and I shall waste neither your time nor mine on that matter. Instead, I offer an alternative prospectus for your consideration.
You are privileged to live in what is commonly described as an “affluent enclave”. So did I, from childhood on Richmond Green to, after 30 years’ military service, a leafy corner of North-West Surrey and eventually to Jersey where I live in what is commonly termed “comfortable retirement”.
Here in Jersey I find a remarkable difference from life in UK. By virtue of geography and population [89,000 on a 9x5 mile Island] we live cheek-by-jowl with neighbours of all sorts … and yet there is no friction. My home is at least in the same price-bracket as yours, yet I have less well-off [but excellent] neighbours. More significantly, whether rich or poor, ALL give to charity according to their means. And, because we have no “welfare state” as is understood in UK, the “widow’s mite” has real relevance here. And yet Jersey gives … our Royal British Legion Branch is the highest fund-raiser of all Branches. Many basic services which are State-funded in UK are here run by charities, such as Family Nursing and Home Care. There is no NHS, except at the Hospital door … GPs and Dentists are ALL private, regardless of the individual’s means. And yet, we give to others, endlessly and in profusion.
Could not Gray’s Lane residents consider a higher cause than their own? Could they not recognise the need of SSAFA and, instead of objecting to the planned change of use, take the higher moral ground and say, “We understand. These are, temporarily, our people too.” Instead of objecting, be positive: raise funds for SSAFA; support those families whose main breadwinner has been shattered in the Nation’s service; be a beacon of hope for those in grave need; and GIVE, instead of take.
I have little hope that this will change many minds. However, I cannot deny my fortunate past, and I am conscious of my un-scarred service to Her Majesty over 30 years. I must say what I feel: "Draw back now, it is not too late."

I find it hard to believe that people are objecting to plans to help the families of our service women and men! If it was not for their gallantry our little island we have the privilage to be living on would not be like it is now. Imagine if WW2 had a different outcome...I hear people say "well it did'nt"...and why is that exactly hm...? Yes - because of our service women and men who laid down their lives to make our lives what they are today. Perhaps these individuals who oppose these plans should be shipped to the war torn areas to live and try to survive there - just to be gratefull for what our services have done and in our day and age are still doing just to make sure we can live in a better place. The non supporters should be ashamed of themselves... SUPPORT THE TROOPS they are fighting for us!

I'm amazed that NIMBYism is so prevalent even when it comes down to the health and welfare of those who give themselves for their country. I fully support all those residents of Grays Lane who support the accomodation and I'm abhored that there are others who are so self-righteous that they would deny the families of injured personnel the ability to visit them and support them. They should be ashamed of themselves.
